Updated on 31 October 2026

Net metering ends on 1 January 2027.

Then you can no longer offset what you feed back against what you use (salderen).

Free and without obligation.

Solar panels on the roof of a cutaway house.

1.25 cents net per kWh fed backUntil 2030 at least half the bare rate4 times cheaper: your own power

What changes.

  • No more net metering

Up to and including 31 December 2026 you can still use net metering. From 1 January 2027 you cannot.

  • A payment for feed-in

Your supplier pays a feed-in payment (terugleververgoeding). Until 2030 it is at least half the bare supply rate: the electricity price without energy tax and VAT.

  • Feed-in costs

Many suppliers already charge feed-in costs (terugleverkosten) for power you feed back. From 2027 they must charge those costs to customers with solar panels, says the ACM, the Dutch market regulator. The costs can be higher than the payment.

  • A contract that runs into 2027

Does your contract run into 2027? Net metering still stops on 1 January. Your supplier then settles in two parts: up to and including 31 December 2026 with net metering, after that without.

From now to after 2030.

This is how it goes, according to the ACM and the Dutch government (Rijksoverheid).

  • Up to and including 31 December 2026

You still use net metering. What you feed back is offset against what you use.

  • From 1 January 2027

Net metering stops. You pay energy tax and VAT on all power you take from your supplier. On power you generate yourself and use straight away, you pay nothing.

  • 2027 to 2029

Your feed-in payment is at least half the bare supply rate. This minimum applies until 1 January 2030.

  • From 1 January 2030

The minimum of half no longer applies. Your supplier sets the payment itself, and it must be reasonable, says the ACM. How much it is will be in your contract.

What it means for you.

What you feed back earns around 1.25 cents per kWh net on a fixed or variable contract, Milieu Centraal calculates. What you use yourself saves you the full electricity price.

  • 25%The share of your solar power you use yourself, without a home battery. Our guideline figure.
  • 75%+With a home battery and Smart‑E‑Grid. Our guideline figure.
  • 4 timesYour own solar power is around 4 times cheaper than power you buy, according to Milieu Centraal.

Milieu Centraal assumes around 30% own use without a battery. We calculate more cautiously, with 25%.

What you can do now.

  • Check your contract

When does it end, and what does your supplier charge in feed-in costs? With a dynamic contract, where the price changes every hour, feed-in costs are lower, according to the ACM.

  • Use more yourself

Run your hot water tank, EV charger or heat pump while your own panels produce. A home battery stores what is left for the evening.

  • Have it calculated

The home scan shows what it saves for your home. We only suggest a battery if it saves at least € 200 a year and pays for itself within 10 years. That is our own rule.

Also for your business or club.

Net metering is only possible with a small connection, up to 3x80 amps. Homes have one, but so do small businesses and many clubhouses. With a larger connection you could never use net metering, so nothing changes.

  • Your business

With a small connection, net metering stops on 1 January 2027, just like at home. What you use yourself during the day then earns the most.

How it works for your business
  • Your club

An outdoor sports club generates mostly during the day and in summer, and uses the most on weekday evenings and at weekends. That is why a club feeds back a lot, the minister wrote in September 2026. Sports halls and swimming pools usually have a large connection.

Questions about net metering.

Is it final?

Yes. The House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) passed the law on 14 November 2024, the Senate (Eerste Kamer) on 17 December 2024. It takes effect on 1 January 2027. Your supplier cannot postpone that date, says the ACM.

In September 2026 the government wrote again that it will not extend the scheme.

Do solar panels still pay off after 2027?

Yes. According to Milieu Centraal they still pay off, and you earn them back within their lifetime. What you use yourself earns the most.

How do I avoid feed-in costs?

Avoiding them completely is usually not possible. You pay less if you feed back less: use more yourself, or store it in a home battery. According to the ACM, feed-in costs are lower with a dynamic contract.

Should I switch off my panels?

On a fixed or variable contract, that costs you money. Even when you are not at home, you use power, for example for your fridge and wifi. If you switch the panels off, you buy that power at around 4 times the price, Milieu Centraal calculates.

On a dynamic contract it can sometimes pay to stop feeding back for a while. That is when the hourly price is negative, because then you pay for what you feed back.

What is energieleveren.nl?

The website of the grid operators, where you register solar panels and a home battery. This is required by law. It tells the grid operators where panels and batteries are, so they can keep the grid stable.

You create an account with the last digits of your meter number. To use net metering, your panels must be registered there, says the ACM. Your installer can also do it for you.

I already have solar panels. What do I do now?

First check when your contract ends and what your supplier charges in feed-in costs. Then use more of your own power during the day. The home scan calculates whether a home battery and smart control pay off for your home.

Battery now, or wait?

You can buy now. It earns the most from 1 January 2027. As long as you still have net metering, a battery earns little. The home scan calculates whether a battery suits your home.
